O’Dea cannot defend eviction of former Army Officers

Fine Gael Dublin South East Deputy Lucinda Creighton, has today (Thursday) called on Minister Willie O’Dea to confirm that residents of the family quarters in Cathal Brugha Barracks will not be evicted next month as stated in a letter sent by his Department to residents recently.
Deputy Creighton expressed serious concerned for the plight of former Army Officers and their families who have been served with an eviction notice, despite having resided in the Barracks for some 30 years.
Speaking to an adjournment motion tabled by her in Dáil Éireann this afternoon Deputy Creighton stated:
“The individuals involved are either former Army Officers or their family members in the event that they are deceased. Every household has differing personal circumstances but with one common bond – that all of the fathers of each family unit has served their full 21 years in the Irish Army and their families have resided in the married quarters for over thirty years.
“These are honourable people who have given the State some service as long standing members of the Defence Forces. It is appalling that they have been treated in such a shoddy fashion by the Department of Defence which has served on them a cold and callous eviction notice, without prior warning. I am calling on Willie O’Dea to confirm that these people will not be evicted and that the State will ensure that their well being is protected long into the future.”
